A Big " Thank You" to Those Who Helped with 2010 Heifer Volunteer Activities:

  • Shelly Staat (coordinator), Monica Geocaris, Linda Nishi, Scott Roos, and Betsy Storm for presenting a Heifer exhibit at the Lincoln Square Garden Walk and Green Fair on Saturday, August 31.
  • Amanda Jones and Duane and Linda Arnold for presenting a Heifer exhibit at the EnviroFest 2010 in Elkhart, IN, on Friday, July 23.
  • Wendy Davis for presenting an “Ark” plaque on June 3 to the Olive/Mary Stitt elementary school in District 25 in Arlington Heights. This was the second time the children, families and teachers at the schold stepped up to the challenge and raised $5000 through the “Read to Feed” program. A great program and a great school! Wendy found the program easy to introduce with the help of the school librarian.
  • Margaret, Susan, and Rich Eyre and all the volunteers and customers that made the hosta Happenings at Rich's Foxwillow Pines Nursery a great success on May 29. The Hosta Happening generated $3750, and over $6,000 was sent to Heifer International for combined hosta and perennial sales during the months of April and May. All donations will be matched for a Heifer project in Honduras. Click here for more details and photos.
  • Barb Christian, Twila and Loren Habegger, Mary Hughes-Olson, and Amanda Jones for staffing a Heifer exhibit at the GR2010 - Celebrating Sustainability event in Joliet on May 22.
  • Wendy Davis for giving a presentation about the work of Heifer at the St. Simon's Episcopal Church in Arlington Heights on April 25.

  • Karen Fox, Barb Christian, Mary Hughes-Olson and Rosemary Larson for staffing a Heifer booth at the Citizens Against Ruining the Environment (CARE) 8th Annual Earth Day Fest in Romeoville on April 18. A main focus was sustainability, one of the Heifer Cornerstones.
  • Amanda Jones and Rick Davis for staffing a Heifer booth at the Forum on Faith and Food for Chicago area seminaries held on Saturday, April 17.
  • Tom Amos, Cathy Cahill, Twila & Loren Habegger, Amanda Jones, Linda Nishi, Chris Quinlan, Carol Reichel, and Ken Schroeder for staffing a Heifer booth at the Religion Communication Congress 2010 at the Downtown Marriott in Chicago on April 7-9.

  • Susan and Rich Eyre from Richís Foxwillow Pines Nursery for sponsoring a booth to sell hostas and conifers to benefit Heifer at the Chicago Flower and Garden Show at Navy Pier, March 6-14. The proceeds were sent to Heifer to support the Kierhe Community Based Watershed Management Project In Rwanda (ID#21-1326-01). Every dollar sent in is matched with $3.00! So we did really well with the $4,130 of proceeds turning into $16,520.
The long list of volunteers that helped at the booth included Tom Amos, Andy & Faith Campbell, Janet Cape, Karen Fox, Mary Francoeur, Jean Gilligan/Stephanie, Loren & Twila Habegger, Joan Hanover, Donna Hurst, Amanda Jones, Lynn Kalata, Judy Krych, Lois Nicol, Linda Nishi, Carol Reichel, Lisa Rhodes, Ken Schroeder, Janet Simpson, Lynne & Marty Sobczak, Phyllis Stowe, and Chuck & Marilyn Wonderlic
  • Cathy Cahill (coordinator), Christine Fisher, Loren & Twila Habegger, Amanda Jones, Linda Kuhn, Lisa Lois, Nicol Scacco, Shelly Staat, and Michelle Thoma-Culver for staffing a Heifer booth at the Family Farmed Expo at the UIC Forum in Chicago on March 13.

  • Rick Davis for giving a presentation to 26 Brownies from Troop 60, Washington School, Evanston, on February 23. Rick spoke about what Heifer is doing to assist earthquake victims in Haiti. The troop is planning a fund raising event for Heifer's work in Haiti.

  • Cathy Cahill for convening our Chicago Heifer volunteers for a planning meeting on February 8.
  • Rick Davis for giving a presentation on February 5 to the Ravinia Elementary School in Highland Park about what Heifer is doing to assist earthquake victims in Haiti. In the following three weeks, the students (K1-5th Graders) raised $2,077.76 for Heifer doing chores and tasks around their houses as part of the school's Care-A-Thon program.
  • Barb Christian for making a presentation to 150 attendees at the St. John's Luthern School in Elgin, IL, on February 3.
  • Rick Davis for giving a follow-up presentation on January 19 at the Orrington School in Evanston where he spoke on December 10. A statement from the Brownie Troop:
"On behalf of Orrington Elementary School's third-grade Brownie Troop 1605 in Evanston, Illinois, I am very excited to present this check for $473 payable to Heifer International. The 25 girls in our troop worked very hard to develop, promote, and host a bake sale, and our donation reflects the total proceeds of their amazing effort. The troop has taken a vote, and would like to donate a number of animal gifts with the funds raised. Specifically: One water buffalo, one goat, two honeybee hives, and two flocks of chicks."
  • Ken Schroeder for giving a presentation about Heifer to a group of 60 in the Adult Ed Hour at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Lombard on January 17.
  • Rick Davis for giving a presentation about Heifer to a group of 55 at the Evanston Rotary (Breakfast Club) on January 5.
