- Tom Amos for making a Heifer presentation on January 11, 2012, at the meeting of the Women's Club of Antioch, IL.
2011 Chicago Volunteer Activities
- Silvia Abel-Caines, Twila and Loren Habegger, Lisa Hirschmugel, Jan Holley, Angela Hotca-Roos, Anastasia Lugo, Sharon Pittman, Susana Poppe, Carol Pyle, and Laurie Tsukuno for providing gift-wrapping services on behalf of Heifer to Barnes and Noble customers at the Oak Brook Mall store on Sunday, December 11, and Friday, December 16.
- Twila and Loren Habegger for presenting, for the second year, a Heifer exhibit at the Christmas fair at the United Church of Byron, Byron, IL, on Saturday, December 3.
- Cathy Cahill, Peggy Rubens, Cathleen Cooke, and Nancy Wells for providing gift-wrapping services on behalf of Heifer to Barnes and Noble customers at the Chicago State Street store on Saturday, November 28, and Wenesday, December 14.
- Rick Davis for doing a presentation on November 25 about Heifer to the residents of the Wesley Manor Retirement Community in Frankfort, IN. There were approximately 25 residents in attendance and many were already familiar with Heifer's work. One resident, Vera Swatner, personally knew the family that raised Faith the cow. Rick's contact at Wesley Manor is Leah Bontrager.
- Rick Davis for doing a presentation on November 21 about Heifer to the fourth graders of Roycemore School in Evanston. Rick's contact at Roycemore is Jeff Giles. His students will be doing another bake/plant sale on December 14 to raise money for Heifer.
- Loren Habegger for staffing a Heifer booth at the Church of the Brethren, Il/WI District Conference, on November 5, at Lake Williamson, Carlinville, IL
- Barb Christian for making a presentation at the USDA Milk Market Administrators
Combined Federal Campaign Kick-off in Lisle, IL, on October 25, 2011.
- Rick Davis for speaking on October 24 to approximately 240 men and women employed by the Chicago Transportation Authority in Skokie, IL. Rick spoke about Heifer's mission, how Heifer does it work, how it is different from other hunger charities, how it was founded, and the Chicago Heifer projects. The talk was arranged by Combined Charities and the contact was Chris Koziel.
- Wendy Davis for giving on October 3 a presentation about her study tours with Heifer to a P.E.O. women's group focusing on women's issues.
- Wendy Davis for making a presentation to the Plymouth Place Women's Club in Lagrange Park at their meeting on September 19, 2011. They have chosen Heifer as their charity of the year and will be sending a check in December.
- Rick Davis, who was invited by Lee Fiorio, a teacher, to speak on October 2 to his two architecture classes at Glenbrook South High School about Heifer's 'green' headquarters building.
- Nancy Handke (coordinator), the team at Church of the Holy Nativity in Clarendon Hills and Heifer-Chicago volunteers Tom & Rosalie Amos, Lynne Atherton, Cathy Cahill, Fred Chase, Barb & Dale Christian, Wendy Davis, Karen Fox, Mary Francoeur, Loren & Twila Habegger, Chris Quinlan, Laurie Tsukuno, and Lori Wolf for successfully presenting the 5th annual Family Farm Fest. - Rick Davis and Rosemary Larson for making presentations about Heifer's work at the Hugh O'Brien Youth World Leadership Congress on July 28, 2011. The Congress, which is a week long program, took place this year at Loyola University with more than 400 sophomores from high schools all over the world in attendance. Click here

- Duane Arnold (coordinator), Beth and Linda Arnold, Phil Berkey, Michelle Blough, Loren and Twila Habegger, and Peggy Reiff-Miller for staffing an exhibit at the Church of the Brethren Annual Conference in Grand Rapids, MI,
July 2-6.
- The Hosta Happening June 11, 2011 was a huge success. Rich's Foxwillow Pines Nursery and the Eyre family hosted the Heifer Foundation as special guests. President and CEO of Heifer Foundation, Domingo Barrios, presented Margaret Eyre with a Certificate of Service:
"In celebration of the 'Hosta Happening' and for your service and dedication to Heiferís ongoing mission of ending hunger and poverty and caring of the Earth." Margaret was thrilled to be acknowledged for her work.

Hosta Happening Summary
- Audrey Veath for staffing a booth at the YMCA Senior Health Day in Barrington, IL, on May 25
- The Children at Hyde Park Union Church, who on May 22 presented their annual Animal Poetry Reading at the church. The children learn about Heifer International while they prepare poems, which they could find in a book or write themselves. The kids put much
time, effort and creativity into preparation for the benefit performance that raises awareness and funds for Heifer International. The Heifer Chicago office provided an animal pin for each child and a certificate of recognition for their work. More in Picture Gallery below)
- The Children at Faith United Methodist Church for a fundraising effort, concluded on May 22, to benefit Heifer International. The Heifer Chicago office provided an animal pin for each child and a certificate of recognition for their work.
- Nancy Handke (coordinator), Laura Lewis-Barr, Mari Lu Conelley, Don Good, Twila and Loren Habegger, Mary Hughes-Olson, Kim Selir, Audrey Veath, and Lori Wolf for staffing the Heifer booth at GR2011: Celebrating Sustainability Festival in Joliet on May 21. (see pictures in Picture Gallery below and in the Heifer Chicago Picasa Photo Album.
- Ed Slomski, Rosemary Larson, and others from the Huntley Heifer Team for planning on May 11 the 4th annual foot-stomping, hand-clapping, raucous jazz concert featuring the Blooze Brothers Band. In addition to the concert proceeds, over $800 was collected for Heifer from silent auction proceeds.
- Linda Nishi for making a presentation at the St Clement school in Chicago on April 19 to conclude their Lenten fundraising for Heifer. The school presented a check of $7000 to Heifer.
- Twila and Loren Habegger for making a presentation at the St Helen school in Chicago on April 19 to conclude their Lenten fundraising for Heifer. The school presented checks to Heifer totaling $2805.
- Cathy Cahill, Tom Amos, Beryl Bills, Loren Habegger, Twila Habegger, and Nancy Handke for planning the Heifer Chicago Volunteer Luncheon on April 16 at Kendall College. An appreciation is also extended to the approximately 40 volunteers and Chris Quinlan and Pat Keay from the Heifer organization that attended the luncheon.
- Jean Barker, Cathleen Cooke, Loren and Twila Habegger, Betsy Storm, and Fred Wayland for staffing a Heifer booth at the 2011 Family Farmed Expo at the UIC Forum in Chicago, March 19. Family Farmed Expo is gathering of Chicago-area fans of locally grown and responsibly produced food and artisanal goods. Approximately 150 visitors to the booth were givin information about the Heifer world-wide program to end hunger and care for the earth.
- Susan, Rich and Margaret Eyre and all the Heifer volunteers who donated their time to promote the organization they love and believe in at the 2011 Chicago Flower and Garden Show. Over 60 volunteers helped sell conifers, hostas, and other items during the 9 day show at Navy Pier March 5-13. There were many opportunities to chat with interested people and promote Heifer International and Heifer Foundation. The show was a huge success for Heifer International with a total of $6411.50 sent to Vicki Clarke for Heifer projects in Zimbabwe.
Also, special thanks to Susan H for donating 30% of Shona scultpture sales to Heifer International.
- Karen Fox, Monica Geocaris, and Loren Habegger for staffing a Heifer exhibit at the 5th Annual Global Health Resource Fair, on February 24, at Northwestern University, Evanston, IL. The objective was to invite NU students to participate in the activities of Heifer in the Chicago area. Be ready to welcome these students as they partner with us in our activities.
- Tom Amos for making a Heifer presentation on February 23 in Buffalo Grove at the meeting of the 10th District of N.E. Illinois Federated Women's Clubs . Speakers from Heifer and various other organizations were invited to give previews of their ongoing programs to representatives from 14 Women's Clubs. The representatives will then select programs for their individual clubs for the coming year.
- Tom Amos for making a Heifer presentation on February 13, 2011, at the meeting of the Chapter 9 Women's Association, Glenview Community Church.
- Tom Amos for making a Heifer presentation on January 19, 2011, to the Adult Education Class of the Arlington Heights United Methodist Church.
- Rick Davis and Henrietta Atkins for presenting four Heifer talks to students at Evanston High School on January 10, 2011. The Sophomore Class elected to help Heifer raise money to end hunger as their class service project, and Rick spoke to the student leaders who will be organizing the event. The students are planning to make papier mache cut outs of the various animals Heifer uses on their projects as well as paper banks to collect monies. The teacher in charge of the project for the class assured Rick she would keep us informed of their progress and the results of their project.
2010 Chicago Volunteer Activities
- Rick Davis for giving a presentation to the fourth grade students at the Roycemore School on December 17. The students had already raised $500 from a bake sale for Heifer, and are planning to do a plant sale in the spring. more>>
- Twila Habegger (coordinator), Linda Cirillo, Loren Habegger, Debbie O'Malley, Laurie Tsukuno, and Sue Wolsko for providing gift-wrapping services on behalf of Heifer to Barnes and Noble customers at the Oak Brook Mall store on Monday, December 13.
- Twila and Loren Habegger for driving through the snow to present a Heifer exhibit at the Christmas fair at the United Church of Byron, Byron, IL, on Saturday, December 4.
- Cathy Cahill and Mary Pat Cahill for providing gift-wrapping services on behalf of Heifer to Barnes and Noble customers at the Chicago State Street store on Friday, November 26.
- Mark and Christine Winger, Pat Hogan, and Christy Waltersdorff for presenting a Heifer exhibit at the Highland Avenue Church of the Brethren "Peace on Earth" Christmas Fair in Elgin on Saturday, November 20.
- Beryl Bills, Tom Amos, Audrey Veath, Nancy Handke and the many volunteers for making the Quilt Auction on November 5 at the Glenview Community Church a phenomenal success. Over $66,000 was raised for Heifer from all contributing sources. more>>
- Loren Habegger for presenting a Heifer exhibit at the Church of the Brethren Illinois/Wisconsin District Conference on Saturday, November 5.
- Wendy Davis for presenting on September 23 a program about her trip to Senegal and Ghana to a P.E.O. group of about 30-35 women focusing on women's issues.
- Phyllis and David Stowe and all the volunteers at the first Car Boot (Trunk) Rummage Sale and Family Day held at the York Center Church of the Brethren on September 18. Although the rain ended the event at noon, the spirit and enthusiasm for this first time Heifer event in the area encouraged plans for a repeat in the future. (See also Picture Gallery below)
- Margaret, Susan, and Rich Eyre and all the volunteers and customers that made the 2nd Hosta Happenings at Rich's Foxwillow Pines Nursery a great success on August 28. The sale day generated $3600.00, and including the June and July hosta sales they were able to send over $4,2000 to Heifer International for the Honduras Sustainable Food Systems Project. And the money will be doubled by matching funds. So the total amount raised from hosta sales this summer was $8,415.00. more>>
- Wendy Davis for spending August 31st with students at Dryden grade school in Arlington Heights. The 450 students and 50+ staff did a Read to Feed project over the summer. Wendy made a presention to each grade level for 20-25 minutes, and gave a Cornerstone Bookmark to each student.
- Shelly Staat (coordinator), Monica Geocaris, Linda Nishi, Scott Roos, and Betsy Storm for presenting a Heifer exhibit at the Lincoln Square Garden Walk and Green Fair on Saturday, August 31.
- Amanda Jones and Duane and Linda Arnold for presenting a Heifer exhibit at the EnviroFest 2010 in Elkhart, IN, on Friday, July 23.
- Wendy Davis for presenting an “Ark” plaque on June 3 to the Olive/Mary Stitt elementary school in District 25 in Arlington Heights. This was the second time the children, families and teachers at the schold stepped up to the challenge and raised $5000 through the “Read to Feed” program. A great program and a great school! Wendy found the program easy to introduce with the help of the school librarian.
- Margaret, Susan, and Rich Eyre and all the volunteers and customers that made the Hosta Happenings at Rich's Foxwillow Pines Nursery a great success on May 29. The Hosta Happening generated $3750, and over $6,000 was sent to Heifer International for combined hosta and perennial sales during the months of April and May. All donations will be matched for a Heifer project in Honduras. Click here for more details and photos.
- Barb Christian, Twila and Loren Habegger, Mary Hughes-Olson, and Amanda Jones for staffing a Heifer exhibit at the GR2010 - Celebrating Sustainability event in Joliet on May 22.
- Wendy Davis for giving a presentation about the work of Heifer at the St. Simon's Episcopal Church in Arlington Heights on April 25.
- Tom Amos and Beryl Bills fo providing leadership for the Quilt Auction planning meeting on April 24. Quilts on hand were displayed (See Picture Gallery below)
- Karen Fox, Barb Christian, Mary Hughes-Olson and Rosemary Larson for staffing a Heifer booth at the Citizens Against Ruining the Environment (CARE) 8th Annual Earth Day Fest in Romeoville on April 18. A main focus was sustainability, one of the Heifer Cornerstones.
- Amanda Jones and Rick Davis for staffing a Heifer booth at the Forum on Faith and Food for Chicago area seminaries held on Saturday, April 17.
- Tom Amos, Cathy Cahill, Twila & Loren Habegger, Amanda Jones, Linda Nishi, Chris Quinlan, Carol Reichel, and Ken Schroeder for staffing a Heifer booth at the Religion Communication Congress 2010 at the Downtown Marriott in Chicago on April 7-9.
- Wendy Davis for giving a presentation about the work of Heifer at the Church of the Incarnation, United Methodist, in Arlington Heights on March 24.
- Susan and Rich Eyre from Richís Foxwillow Pines Nursery for sponsoring a booth to sell hostas and conifers to benefit Heifer at the Chicago Flower and Garden Show at Navy Pier, March 6-14. The proceeds were sent to Heifer to support the Kierhe Community Based Watershed Management Project In Rwanda (ID#21-1326-01). Every dollar sent in is matched with $3.00! So we did really well with the
$4,130 of proceeds turning into $16,520.

- Cathy Cahill (coordinator), Christine Fisher, Loren & Twila Habegger, Amanda Jones, Linda Kuhn, Lisa Lois, Nicol Scacco, Shelly Staat, and Michelle Thoma-Culver for staffing a Heifer booth at the Family Farmed Expo at the UIC Forum in Chicago on March 13.
- Rick Davis for giving a presentation on February 11 to 40 members of the Glenview Rotary (Sunrise Club). His presentation centered on Heifer's work in urban agriculture and urban gardening. He also showed the Seeds of Hope DVD.
- Rick Davis for giving a presentation to 26 Brownies from Troop 60, Washington School, Evanston, on February 23. Rick spoke about what Heifer is doing to assist earthquake victims in Haiti. The troop is planning a fund raising event for Heifer's work in Haiti.
- Ken Schroeder for making a presentation to about 35 persons in the Immanuel Lutheran Church's Couples club in Elmhurst on Feb 21.
- Cathy Cahill for convening our Chicago Heifer volunteers for a planning meeting on February 8.
- Rick Davis for giving a presentation on February 5 to the Ravinia Elementary School in Highland Park about what Heifer is doing to assist earthquake victims in Haiti. In the following three weeks, the students (K1-5th Graders) raised $2,077.76 for Heifer doing chores and tasks around their houses as part of the school's Care-A-Thon program.
- Barb Christian for making a presentation to 150 attendees at the St. John's Luthern School in Elgin, IL, on February 3.
- Rick Davis for giving a follow-up presentation on January 19 at the Orrington School in Evanston where he spoke on December 10. A statement from the Brownie Troop:
"On behalf of Orrington Elementary School's third-grade Brownie Troop 1605 in Evanston, Illinois, I am very excited to present this check for $473 payable to Heifer International. The 25 girls in our troop worked very hard to develop, promote, and host a bake sale, and our donation reflects the total proceeds of their amazing effort. The troop has taken a vote, and would like to donate a number of animal gifts with the funds raised. Specifically: One water buffalo, one goat, two honeybee hives, and two flocks of chicks."
- Ken Schroeder for giving a presentation about Heifer to a group of 60 in the Adult Ed Hour at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Lombard on January 17.
- Rick Davis for giving a presentation about Heifer to a group of 55 at the Evanston Rotary (Breakfast Club) on January 5.
